What’s Happening in Elementary School?

01.27.11

Our K-5 kids are having an extremely awesome time at the X Factor Games taking place as part of our Winter Xtreme series! Our memory verse is John 13:34-35.  This is the verse with the motions:  "You must love one another (cross arms over heart)  just as I have loved you (point up).  If you love one another (cross arms over heart), everyone will know (arms out, palms up) you are my disciples (hands on hips).

In Large Group, seasoned competitor Rock Steadfast has joined up with the rookie (and #1 fan) Scooter O'Donnell. Together, they compete in extreme X Factor events in hopes of winning this year's trophy. But more importantly, they always learn about following Jesus.  During small group, we talk about the importance of what we learned and how we can apply these truths in our own lives.

Here's what we are learning:

Jan.   9  Disciples of Jesus Listen & Obey:  Wise & Foolish Builders (Matt. 7:24-28)

Jan. 16  Disciples of Jesus Help Others Even If It Costs Us:  Good Samaritan (Luke 10:35-37)

Jan. 23  Disciples of Jesus Show Kindness to Others, Even If They Don't Deserve It: Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1-10)

Jan. 30  Disciples of Jesus Respect Authority:  Jesus & Authority (Matt. 22:15-22)

Feb.   6  Disciples of Jesus Show Mercy:  Unforgiving Debtor (Matt. 18:23-35)

Feb. 13  Disciples of Jesus Use Their Gifts to Help Others:  Parable of the Loaned Money (Matt. 25:14-28)

Feb. 20  Disciples of Jesus Are Never Too Busy for People:  Jesus & Nicodemus; Samaritan Women; Jesus & Children  (John 3 & 4, Mark 10)

Feb. 27  Disciples of Jesus Trust That God Has Our Best in Mind:  Jesus Provides a Miraculous Catch of Fish (Luke 5:1-11)

We have been having so much fun experiencing the sights, the sounds, and the people of Winter City!  Throughout this series we are learning how God wants us to do the right thing!  Our Remember Verse is Psalm 11:7  "God (point up) always does (left thumbs up) what is right (right hand thumbs up).  So he loves it (hug self) when people (thumbs to chest) do (left thumbs up) what is right (right thumbs up)."

Each Sunday, in large group, Max and Sydney meet up in Winter City to play.  Together, they run into situations where they have to choose to do the right thing.  With the help of the Bible and a few friends from the city, Max and Sydney learn to do what is right!

Here's a list of each week's Bible story and teaching point:

Jan. 9    I Will Obey:  Abraham Moves (Gen. 12:1-7)

Jan. 16  I Will Do What's Right:  Esther (Book of Esther)

Jan. 23  I Will Control My Anger:  Cain & Abel  (Gen. 4:1-16)

Jan. 30  I Will Be a Good Friend:  Ruth & Naomi (Ruth 1)

Feb.   6  I Will Go to Church:  Jesus & the Children (Mark 10:13-16)

Feb. 13  I Will Be Nice to Others:  Peter & Cornelius (Acts 10)

Feb. 20  I Will Share with Others:  Boys Shares Fish (John 6:1-15)

Feb. 27  I Will Help Others:  Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30-37)

This Sunday in KidSpring we had a great time celebrating the past year! As we reflected on where we've been, we also talked about what God wants for us in 2011. We learned that “I Should Follow Jesus” just the like the wise men who followed the star to Jesus in Matthew 1 & 2.

In small group, lots of kids came ready to receive a sweet treat for memorizing Ephesians 2:8 , which we’ve been practicing the past four weeks.

In large group we played two fun games that helped us remember all the things we've learned in Goody Gumdrop's Christmas Candy Factory.  We also sang our all time favorite songs from the past year, including a "Beach Blast" from the past! It was an awesome way to wrap up the series and ring in the new year.

Join us this Sunday for our brand new series, Winter Xtreme! We’ll have great time with our friends Rock and Scooter as they compete in the annual X-factor Winter Games and learn how to be true disciples of Jesus!

This week we wrapped up our time in Chef Jolly's Christmas Kitchen by learning, "I Can Show That I Love Jesus" just like the Wise Men in this Bible story (Luke 2:1-20):

Chef Jolly's Christmas Kitchen_Bible Story_Week5 from Kidspring Media on Vimeo.

We can all show that we love Jesus by what we say and what we do. Obeying, sharing, going to church, saying kind words, and taking care of our things & bodies are just a few of the ways we can show that we love Jesus.

Join us next week as we begin a new series and take to the streets of Winter City!
