A Change of Plans

Sometimes in life we just have to change our plans. When it comes to breaking plans, we may think of Matthew 5:37. In this verse we are instructed to let our yes be yes and our no be no. We take that to say that if we cancel on plans, we are failing to keep up to God’s standard. But when our commitment to our plans overshadows our commitment to God we sometimes have to change our plans.

Paul struggled with this too. In 2 Corinthians 1 Paul addresses the agitated Corinthians to explain why he canceled his trip back to speak to them. The Corinthians took Paul’s cancellation as a sign of unreliability and were resistant to trust him with bigger matters like preaching the gospel. But what they failed to see was that God, not people or programs, dictated Paul’s schedule.

We are often too program and people driven instead of mission and message driven. If what we’ve planned overshadows God’s plan, it is irresponsible not to make a change.
