A Gift Worth Celebrating

My day at school seemed like an eternity. As the bell rang, I sprinted to the bus, quickly took my seat and encouraged everyone else to do the same.  Arriving home, my impatience grew as my mother, brother and I waited on my dad to get home from work.  I’m sure it was no more than a few hours, but it seemed like days before I saw his car maneuver into the driveway. With my mother snapping pictures, my father pulled a new bicycle from the trunk of the car as I celebrated with excitement and joy. At the time, I thought I had received the greatest gift in the world, and the wait was well worth it. It was decades ago, but I remember my sixth birthday so well because of the gift I received that day.

In Matthew 26, Jesus and his disciples are preparing to celebrate the Passover. This was a critical event in Jewish history, paving the way for the Israelites’ freedom from slavery in Egypt.  Even though the Passover was a time to celebrate history, Jesus also used the time to celebrate the first Lord’s Supper and explain the perfect gift from God, a new covenant.  “This is my blood, God’s new covenant poured out for many people for the forgiveness of sins” (Matthew 26:28 The Message).

Through the Lord’s Supper, we celebrate God’s gift, His only Son Jesus, who poured out his blood on a cross and rose from the tomb so that we might have eternal life. Unlike my bicycle, this is a gift we don’t have to wait for, and it’s a gift that will last for eternity. This gift of salvation and a new life in Jesus Christ is a gift worth celebrating!

  • Take time to reflect on the amazing gift God has provided us through His Son Jesus.
  • Do you have a personal relationship with Jesus?  If not, don’t wait.  Just ask him into your life and celebrate the birth of a new life.
