A Loving Embrace

In a world where we can have relationships with friends via video, voice and text, it’s easy to forget the unique value of having people physically close to us.

God’s designed us to exist in community, just as He enjoys in Himself a special community as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. As Christ followers, we place the high value on using God’s Word to strengthen and encourage each other. But the power of God’s Word in us can be even greater when it is carried, sometimes wordlessly, with our bodies.

Jesus declares this when He came as the Word of God “in the flesh,” made human, visible and touchable. Jesus shows this when He wordlessly entered the grief of Lazarus’s family and wept. And, Jesus proclaims this when He promised to send the Holy Spirit to be our “comforter,” His constant, faithful presence with us that provides a physical and spiritual “peace that surpasses all understanding.” (Philippians 4:7)

One reason we can’t do life alone is that sometimes our fullest experience of the comfort of Christ comes only when we physically share in the sufferings and joys of another. It is a unique way for each of us to understand our physical and spiritual union with Christ in His body, the church.
