A Radical Life

In Mark 14, Jesus is anointed by a woman with a jar of expensive perfume-- so expensive that it was worth 300 denarii, or nearly a year's worth of wages. Some of Jesus’s followers were upset by the woman's apparent waste of resources. They couldn't understand how Jesus could allow this costly and precious gift to be poured out instead of sold for money to give to the poor. They even scolded and rebuked the woman harshly for her decision.

What these people failed to understand is that it's not about money, perfume or even the poor. It's all about Jesus. The woman made a sacrifice for Jesus, not because she wanted to receive credit for her bold act of generosity, but because she realized He is the center of everything.

This woman’s extravagant act reminds us how we should live daily. We should love unconditionally, give wholeheartedly and serve joyfully, understanding that everything we do is because of and for Jesus. Colossians 3:23 reminds us, "whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men." When Jesus is at the core of our decision making, we have the ability to live radical lives.

Reflect:

  • How are you living radically in your daily life right now?
  • Have you ever made a sacrifice or done something for Jesus that other people thought was excessive? How do you deal with people who don't understand your actions?
