A Second Chance = Mercy

Jonah 3:1

“Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time…” (Jonah 3:1). This verse is good news for all of us. Not a day goes by that we don’t need a second chance. Every time we offend our mates, our kids or our bosses, we need a second chance. We offend God all the time, but He is “merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love” (Psalm 103: 8). God’s mercy moves Him to give us second chances.

Jonah was God’s prophet. God gave him a clear command, “go to Nineveh… and cry out against it” (Jonah 1:2). Jonah didn’t want Nineveh to get right with God. He wanted God to wipe Nineveh from the face of the earth. The Ninevites were wicked and deserved judgment. But that wasn’t the point. God wanted to show them mercy.

Jonah ran from his responsibility and right into the belly of a big fish. Suddenly, Jonah wanted a second chance to obey God. From the belly of the fish, Jonah prayed and begged God for a chance to do the right thing. God was merciful and gave him the opportunity to obey. Jonah preached and Nineveh repented. In mercy, God delivered Jonah and saved a city. Neither Jonah nor the city deserved it.

Mercy always equals a second chance. Mercy is always undeserved. Give thanks for God’s mercy and share the mercy you’ve received with others. Saved people serve people by giving them a second chance.
