Almost Persuaded

Have you ever felt like you weren't good enough?

About a year ago a couple came to church with me. I was very excited because I had been inviting them for quite some time. The music, fellowship, and message were phenomenal. I was so happy they were in an environment to hear the gospel. When the invitation was given, I prayed that each of them would receive the gospel. During the altar call, the young lady raised her hand to receive Christ! When I asked  if she would like for me to walk with her to the altar, she said, “Yes.” Her boyfriend, however, pulled her back and persuaded her not to go. It was awful. I felt so sad for her and even sadder for him because he was blind to the Holy Spirit.

On the drive home he tried to explain his actions to me. He said that a person should not go to the altar to accept Christ unless they know they’re going to live a “clean” life. I tried to explain to him that Jesus accepts us just as we are, and when we give our hearts to Him, He does the cleaning.

The apostle Paul witnessed to a couple once. Felix and his wife listened to the gospel. The governor seemed almost persuaded; at least until he was frightened over Paul’s words of “righteousness, self-control and the judgment to come” (Acts 24:25). Felix was willing to hear the gospel, but he was not willing to allow the gospel to fill him and cleanse him. Like my friend, he was afraid he wouldn’t be “good” enough to be a Christian. The message of the gospel, however, is that we don’t have to be good enough. God cleanses, God fills and God washes away all our sin when we accept Christ. We get to come just as we are.

  • Is there anything holding you back from giving your all to Christ? If so, do you know that He is willing and able to help you and deliver you?
  • What pleasures are you willing to let go of in order to take hold of the treasures of God?
