Am I Hearing Voices?

You’re in the store picking up items on your list. From the next aisle you hear a cough or laugh and realize one of your family members is a few feet away. All it takes is a sound; that’s how well you know those you love. Because you have spent time with them, talked with them and listened to them, recognizing their voices is easy.

There’s no shortage of voices speaking to us. Many offer solid advice, but many will lead us in the wrong direction. Proverbs 14:15 says, “The simple believes everything, but the prudent gives thought to his steps.” How do we know if our thoughts or the advice of others line up with what God wants for us? We have to know His voice.

We can recognize God’s voice just as quickly as we recognize a familiar voice in the store or on the phone. God has invited each one of us into a close relationship through Jesus. After we decide to follow Jesus, our relationship grows as we spend time talking to God through prayer, spend time reading the Bible and allowing God’s Spirit to guide us. As we grow closer to Jesus, it becomes easier to recognize His voice.

Jesus spoke to this close relationship in John 10:27. “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” Don’t believe every voice, but give thought to your steps by relying on a relationship with God.

  • Have you started a relationship with God? If not, beginning a relationship with Him could be your first step in hearing His voice.
  • Are you finding it easy or hard to recognize God’s voice? What is one thing you can do today to begin hearing Him more clearly?
