Anchoring Our Hope

There are plenty of things that we hope or wish for and most can be put into three different categories; health, wealth or happiness. We can get to a point where we want something so badly that we find ourselves putting all of our hope into getting or maintaining that one thing, whether it be a particular circumstance, job or person. Then if we don’t get it or lose it, our hope fades as fast as it came. Some of the most heart breaking experiences of my life has been looking into the eyes of someone that had lost all hope.

In our lives there needs to be a distinct difference between “hoping for” something and “hoping in” it. When we put our hope in the things of this world it can be fleeting and become clouded with fear and doubt. We are then left at a point of confusion, darkness and desperation. As spoken in Job 7:6-7, “My days fly faster than a weaver’s shuttle. They end without hope. O God, remember that my life is but a breath, and I will never again feel happiness.”

But when we rest our hope IN Jesus Christ, it will be the only thing that isn’t ever changing and doesn’t waver. “Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise. “(Hebrews 10:23) We have to choose to hold tightly and put all of our hope and trust in God’s promises of provision, protection and guidance. This kind of hope is “a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls.” (Hebrews 6:19a) Once we anchor ourselves to Him and His Word, then our hope will never be lost.
