Are You Holding Something That Isn’t Yours?

Say you let a friend use your car for a season so they could get around. When you asked for your car back, you would expect your friend to give it back to you, right?

What would happen if your friend decided they didn’t want to give you back your car? You would probably be pretty upset. After all, the car belongs to you. Even if you remained friends, you’d probably think twice before trusting that person with anything else.

In Mark 12, religious leaders question Jesus about whether or not they should pay taxes. Jesus responds by saying, “Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s. (Mark 12:17). The religious leaders were amazed at Jesus’ response. Jesus made it clear that we are to give back to God what belongs to Him.

Everything we have belongs to God. All our possessions have been given to us by Him. However we have a tendency to hold onto some areas of our lives and not completely surrender to Jesus. As Christians, we are called to give our whole lives to Jesus and not hold anything back. Because the truth is, if Jesus isn’t Lord of all then He isn’t Lord at all.

  • What do you have that you need to give back to God? Maybe it’s your time. Maybe it’s your resources. Or maybe it’s your finances.
  • Is there any area of your life where you need to make Jesus Lord?
