Are You Making the Wise Decision?

Sometimes the wise decision is clear. But, what about when it’s not?

God gave Solomon, a young man and new king, the opportunity to ask for anything. Feeling in over his head, Solomon asked for wisdom to lead the people and as a result, he became one of the wisest men who ever lived (2 Chronicles 1:7-11). Proverbs is a collection of Solomon’s sayings.

Like Solomon, we all go through crossroads where we are forced to make big decisions, and we want to make the wise one.

In Proverbs 1:5, Solomon says, “let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance.“ In other words, wisdom is being humble enough to seek counsel.

God is able to speak to us audibly, and sometimes He does. But more often than not, God chooses to work through people. None of the relationships in your life are coincidental. God places people in our lives for a reason. Everyone you know has unique giftings, backgrounds and life experiences.

Maybe you’re facing a big decision in your finances. Is there someone you know who loves Jesus and has been wise with their money? Maybe your marriage is struggling. Who do you know who’s been married longer and could mentor you through this difficult season? Maybe you’re struggling with a career decision. Who do you know who has been through a similar fork in the road?

God doesn’t leave us alone to float through life’s challenges. He gives us knowledge through the Bible. He gives us guidance through the Holy Spirit. He gives us the power to be heard in prayer. And he allows us to learn from others in the church about what’s wise.

Reflect:

  • What’s one area of your life where you need wisdom?
  • Is there a Christian friend, acquaintance, or family member with expertise in this area that you could seek guidance from?
