Attitude Adjustment

Hardship can make us question everything about our lives, but our attitude can make a difference in how we weather the storm.

Paul knew the power of a good attitude in the face of hardship. In Philippians 1:12-19, he talks about being in prison as if it’s a good thing. He says everyone there knows he’s in chains for Christ, and it has caused people to preach the Gospel all the more. Some, Paul says, are preaching out of love, while others preach simply to cause trouble on his behalf. But Paul chooses to take it all as good, focusing on what all that preaching will do for the kingdom of God. Paul is so sure of God’s goodness he proclaims, “For I know through your prayers and God’s provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance.”

We may not understand why we go through hardships. But we can know that God loves us. He loves us so much He wants good for us more than we do. Because of this, He uses everything in our lives (the good, the bad and the ugly) to move us closer to Him and to spread the word about Jesus. If we keep that in mind, we can keep going, even when we think we can’t.
