Authenticity Trumps Appearances

I spend a good portion of my day thinking about food and exercise in an effort to stay thin-ish. I do my hair, wear stylish clothes and try to fit in by having the right look. Apparently, so did the women of Zion. In Isaiah 3:16-17, the prophet describes them as the kind of women whose jewelry, perfume and clothes would make all their friends jealous. But God wasn’t impressed. Not even a little. He called them haughty and promised to take it all away.

God’s not into appearances. God’s into authenticity. 1 Peter 3:3-4 says, “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment ... instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.” Men, this applies to you, too. We ALL care about how the world sees us.

So how do we transition from people who are focused on outward appearances to people who are focused on our inward appearances? Here’s the plan that’s in place at my house. I dare you to try it for a week.

Step 1: Write out 1 Samuel 16:7 and tape it to your mirror, fridge, dashboard, etc.
Step 2: Whenever you see it, say it out loud. Speaking scripture helps us to remember it and imprint it on our hearts.
Step 3: Live it. Let’s spend as much time working on our hearts as we do thinking about food, fashion and exercise.
