Avoidance Never Works

Have you ever watched someone self destruct? This is King Ahaz in 2 Chronicles 28. Ahaz does everything he can to not follow God. He worships made-made idols, sacrifices children and joins in pagan ceremonies.

All sin has consequences, and God sends an army from Aram to teach Ahaz a lesson. But the harder things got for Ahaz, the more he sinned against God. It’s not that Ahaz didn’t know better. After all, his dad was King David, a man known for his affection for the Lord. Ahaz knew he was sinning against God, but instead of making a change, he just kept doing it.

It’s easy to look at Ahaz and think we would never hurt God that way. But how often to do we, like Ahaz, refuse the Lord’s instruction and look to anyone or anything else to make the situation better?

Proverbs 19:20 says, “Listen to advice and accept discipline, and at the end you will be counted among the wise.” We need to listen when God speaks to us through the Bible and the nudging of the Holy Spirit. We must also allow other Christians to speak to us honestly and lovingly about our sin. But all the good, Godly advice in the world only makes a difference if we apply it to our lives and make a change.

If we put our trust in God, He will show us the path of life (Psalm 16:11). Take a good hard look at your life today. Are you pushing away instruction, hoping God will change his mind? What do you need to stop fighting and trust God for today?
