Battles Beneath?

Sometimes the battles we fight have vestiges of battles beneath. The past unforgiveness and bitterness that we try to push from our mind merely hide in the corners of our hearts. Many times, those underlying unresolved issues make their way to the surface, manifesting themselves in our relationships through ugliness and strife. The reason forgiveness is so important is because bitterness festers and cripples our ability to relate well. It will cause us to miss the grace of God. Our hearts are better suited for treasure. Our hearts are where faith, hope and love should abide. Thankfully, Jesus teaches us forgiveness when we experience His forgiveness for our sin. The freedom that comes from encountering Jesus and experiencing the forgiveness of sin frees us to forgive also. We all want to live and relate well.

While in our corners thinking about how to fight the next round, consider the possibility that hidden, buried and unresolved bitterness could be ruling the way we fight in our marriages rather than for them. I believe it is God’s desire for us, while in pursuit of Him, to know what fighting for our marriages looks like.
