Blame It On the Lord

Over and over, the Bible shows us that God values humility. James 4:6 says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Why is God so obsessed with humility? One reason is that He wants us to be happy. We cannot achieve happiness spiritually, financially or relationally without first humbly submitting to God and His Word.

The extent to which we presume we know better than God and act accordingly is the extent to which our lives will fall apart. I’m not saying everyone in trouble is there because of pride; I’m saying that a willful departure from God’s truth invariably brings trouble.

God calls a this kind of pride “folly.” Foolishness is knowing what is right and choosing not to do it. The irony that although our folly creates the mess, our first instinct is to blame God. How many times do the self-centered complain about a bad marriage? How often are people upset at God about being in a dire financial situation after spending several years living beyond their means?

God, grant us the wisdom to ask ourselves the hard question: How much of my situation is due to my own folly? Then give us the humility to confess our mistakes and submit to Your authority.
