Blessing Beyond Monetary Reward

Several years ago, my husband and I were sitting in an auditorium at NewSpring when a pastor on staff asked, "Do you believe God is who He says He is?"

In that moment, God said clearly, "You need to be tithing — now. Trust me."

Eight months earlier, my husband and I had been in an auto accident. I would never be able to work again. My husband's job had disappeared six months prior; he was now drawing Social Security. He chose not to return to work so he could care for me. His check was all we had to live on.

My husband and I had always tithed but during this season we had stopped. We looked at each other and wrote a tithe check that evening. At a time when we had the least money ever, no jobs, no savings, we began to trust God again — completely.
You've heard of folks doing that and having benefactors appear, large sums of money showing up unexpectedly. That does happen, but it didn’t happen to us. Instead, as we began to trust God with our money, He removed every speck of financial stress we suffered. He provided for our needs and taught us not to worry. He replaced our fear of scarcity with a heart of generosity.

If you’re struggling with the decision to give, remember what Jesus says in Matthew 6:30, “if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you” (NLT). God knows your needs and promises to provide. The real question is: Do you believe God is who He says He is? And if so, how will you respond?

  • What is one blessing that you have seen in your life as a result of obedience to God?
  • What next step is God urging you to take today in your finances?
  • Is there any area of your life where God is asking you to take a step of faith and trust Him to provide?
