Butter vs. Margarine

Are you a butter person or a margarine person?

Personally, I’m all butter, all the way. If there’s biscuits but no butter, I just go without. I can taste butter in baked goods and know whether margarine has been used in its place. Though chemically-created, yellow-tinted spreads and sprays try to mimic butter, boast the flavor and texture of butter, and give the same satisfaction on the tongue as butter, one thing remains true: It’s not butter.

What kind of person are we on the inside? Are we true and pure, Christ-like through and through, or do we give the appearance of following Him but have fake stuff within our hearts? Those who are looking can spot the difference.

Jesus called the Pharisees out on this very thing in Luke 11:39, “Then the Lord said to him, ‘Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.’”

Our true composition shows when the heat is on. When difficulty comes (and it will), how does our faith hold up? Does our faith stand firm and maintain its shape, or does it lose its form and melt away under the heat? If we truly have Christ, we will stand firm when trials assault us. We will be “hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9).
