Catching Our Ear

Recently, I tried to help a friend find her lost dog by walking through her neighborhood calling his name. We finally found him in the shrubbery in a neighbor’s back yard. I had walked by this spot two, maybe three times, but her dog had ignored my voice. It wasn’t until my friend walked with me and called his name that he responded.

Jesus tells us in John 10:4-5, “His sheep follow him because they know his voice. But they will never follow a stranger…because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.”

Like the sheep and my friend’s dog, we respond to the voice with which we are most familiar. That’s why it’s so important to make sure that voice belongs to God. The only way to become familiar with God’s voice is to hear it often. Practically speaking, we need to consistently read His Word, continually be in prayer, and get actively involved in church and Christian community. As we become more familiar with God’s voice, we’ll begin to see Him catching our ear and drawing us closer to Him.
