Circumstances or Promises?

I am sure none of us have ever experienced the pain and hopelessness of 430 years of slavery. 430 years! Can you imagine? That is 430 years of back breaking work, beatings, hunger, doubt and prayer.

There are going to be times when it becomes incredibly difficult to remember God’s promises, much less believe them. We are going to face difficulties: death, pain, the loss of a job. But the real question is: Will we listen to our circumstances, or will we listen to what Scripture says? The Israelites knew the promise the Lord had given their father Abraham (Genesis 12:-13). They believed it. They memorized it. They knew of the land that they had been promised. And yet here they were: slaves. But here is what is so amazing. On the eve of their deliverance, 430 years in, Exodus 12:27 says, “...and the people bowed their heads and worshipped”.

If you read through Scripture, the Israelites got a lot of things wrong. They doubted, they feared, they were disobedient. But here we see their hope and their faith in a God who they knew was not going to leave them. On this night, they remembered what the Lord had done for them and chose to worship. No matter what you may be going through, no matter what chains seem to hold you in slavery, choose this day to remember the promises of God and believe that He will come through for you. Worship tonight, for tomorrow could hold your deliverance (Matthew 21:22).
