Commission Over Comfort

Acts 8

When faced with overwhelming opposition, we have two choices: cower in dark corners, huddled and hiding, or move forward. Acts chapter 8 records that after the death of Stephen, a great persecution broke out against the church. The disciples ‘scattered’ just as they did the night Jesus was arrested, but notice the difference. The disciples who scattered did not cower in closets; rather, they boldly and purposefully took the good news of Jesus Christ to the surrounding regions. The Twelve stayed firmly planted in Jerusalem. Their resilience in the face of opposition helped galvanize the early church. The fruit of their courage is found in Acts Chapter 8, as Philip takes the gospel to Samaria and beyond.

Everyone in our church will face difficult times and opposition. The question is: how do we respond? Our church wants to reach 100,000 people in the state of South Carolina with the gospel. So many times we make a decision for our comfort rather than for the commission we’ve been given. What would happen if we put aside our comfort, we embraced the difficulty of our mission, and advanced despite the opposition we face? We reach our goal of 100,000 one person at a time. Every person must be fully engaged and moving forward. Imagine how differently things would have been for the Ethiopian if Philip had chosen to cower at opposition instead of boldly proclaiming the good news. With this same passion, let’s take the message of Jesus no matter what opposition we may face!

  • How did God prove faithful despite the opposition the early church faced?
  • How can we encourage one another to remain courageous despite opposition?
  • Who is the one person in your life that you want to meet Jesus? Pray for that person now.
