Dealing with Temptation

Do you ever find it difficult to deal with temptation? God calls us to overcome temptation, but sometimes it seems almost impossible to do! Thankfully, Jesus set a great example for how to respond to temptation. Jesus had feelings, emotions and desires just like we do, but He never gave in to temptation because He knew God had called Him to something greater.

In Luke 4, Jesus was probably tired and hungry, but He put God’s call before His own needs and desires. After fasting for 40 days, Jesus is tempted by the devil three different times. During each exchange, Jesus fights against Satan by knowing God’s word. When Jesus says “it is written” and “it says,” He is referring to God’s word. Every time Satan speaks, Jesus replies by quoting Scripture. We, as Christians, also have the ability to know the Bible well enough to stand our ground when temptations arise. Like Jesus, we can combat Satan’s lies with God’s word.

Hebrews 2:18 says, “because He Himself suffered when He was tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted.” Jesus was tempted and it was hard on Him just as it is on us, but He prevailed. Because of this, we can look to Jesus for direction when we struggle with temptation. Isn’t it wonderful to have a Savior who understands what we’re going through and is willing to walk with us every step of the way? That is something to celebrate!
