In 1 Samuel 17, David faces battle with a giant more than 9 feet tall. This is a man trained in war, equipped with armor that weighs more than David. Obviously, David is no ordinary fighter. Nothing about him makes people think he could win the battle, yet he proves himself equipped for the fight.
In striking words David tells the giant, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied” (1 Samuel 17:45). In God’s power David defeats the stronghold controlling the Israelite army.
“For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds” (2 Corinthians 10: 3-4). All of our victories are won in God’s strength. Our story becomes life changing when we allow God to equip us for war.
