When someone asks how you’re doing, you probably say “good” without even thinking about it. If we were being honest, a more appropriate response is, “busy.” Students have papers to write, books to read and notes to study. Adults have jobs to do, housework to finish and bills to pay. Parents have soccer games, ballet classes and meetings to attend. We are busy people.

If your endless to-do list wasn’t enough pressure, we live in a society values being busy. In Luke, we find Martha assuming the same attitude as our culture. Too often, we are guilty of being “distracted by all the preparations.” There was work to be done, but Jesus reminds Martha that the solution to her mounting worry was not assistance from her sister, Mary. She did not need to focus on fewer things. She needed to focus on one thing: Jesus.

Mary shows us how to put first things first. Like Mary, take time today to set aside the to-do list and sit at Jesus’ feet. Remember your first love, and listen for His voice.
