Do You Fear God?

Have you ever respected someone so much you’d do anything not to let that person down? Maybe it was a parent, teacher or coach. You wanted to make him or her proud, so you asked questions. A lot of questions. You worked hard and you spent time understanding what makes that person happy.

That level of awe and respect that drives us to success at work, on the ball field or in the classroom is the same kind of awe and respect we should have for God. That’s what Proverbs 9:10 means by, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”

When we think we know everything, we stop seeking God’s input. But when we realize how little we really know, it humbles us and allows us to hear what God has to say. Fear of the Lord isn’t about being scared of God so much as it is about having reverence for His authority, wisdom, and power.

Too often, we picture God up in heaven waiting to strike if we get out of line. God is not trying to smite us. He wants a relationship with us, and He wants to see us succeed. But the first step is to recognize that we need His wisdom in all situations. Because if we don't care what God thinks, we won’t care what He says.

Reflect:

  • How would you describe your feelings toward God? Reverence? Fearful? Apathetic?
  • What’s one area of your life where you need God’s wisdom today?
  • What is one step you can take this week to seek God’s wisdom for that situation?
