Does God Need My Help?

Psalm 50

Sometimes we wake up in the morning, get our coffee, then pray and read our Bibles to check a box with God, as if He needs our help. None of these “to dos” are required from God; He simply wants the best for us. We lose sight of His long, wide, vast and deep love (Ephesians 3:18) and the character of who He is and get caught up in the “shoulds.” God appreciates our sacrifices to Him because it shows that we trust Him and acknowledge that His ways and thoughts are higher than our own (Isaiah 55:9).

Everything in the world belongs to God (Psalm 50:10-12). He doesn’t need anything from us. He’s the one who provides for us (Psalm 50:13-15), and He wants the best for us. Our understanding of God’s greatness shapes our approach to Him. When we see Him as “the Mighty One, the God the Lord,” we bend to His will instead of asking, or demanding, Him to bend to ours (Psalm 50:16-23). We trust that He knows best and that He wants to use us to accomplish more than we could ever ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20-21).

When the bills need to be paid and the account is empty, or after we have witnessed His faithfulness in a healing miracle of a loved one, our thinking changes, and we realize how great God is. We desire to read our Bible, giving a fraction back of what He has given us, and praying becomes out of a desire to serve Him, not to cross off our to-do list for the day. We don't just pay Him lip service. When we see God as He really is, we want to hear what He thinks, and we put His words into practice. We get excited about serving and how we might see God show up. We give our best and our first because we want to experience His blessing, and He is waiting with open arms to give it.

  • Is there any area of your life where you’re ignoring God’s instruction and treating His words like trash? (Psalm 50:17, NLT)
  • What is one way you can show God this week that you trust Him and His guidance and direction, even if it takes faith in something you can’t see yet?
  • If you are honest with yourself, are you tithing, serving, and reading your Bible to serve Christ or to check a box?
