Don’t Be Doubleminded

There’s something instantly compelling about passion. You know it when you see it. You know it when you feel it. Passionate people are focused people. Passionate people devote themselves to what they care deeply about. Passions don’t change on a daily basis. Passions can’t be divided up according to available time.

Scripture offers us a simple way to take our spiritual temperature: Are we singleminded about Jesus?

Many of us compartmentalize our lives, telling ourselves that we’re being responsible or good stewards of our time and resources. But Jesus is clear with us: our job is to “seek first” (Matthew 6:33). He warns us that we cannot be a slave of two masters (Matthew 6:24). He admonishes those who think worldly realities have a legitimate place in diverting attention from loving, following, serving and celebrating Him, whether it’s burying a dead father (Matthew 8:22) or caring for fields, livestock or family. (Luke 14:18-20).

Everywhere in Scripture, love for Jesus is tested by our willingness to follow His commands. Our passion for His name can be measured by whether we are willing, in all circumstances, to listen to His voice and do what He says.
