Don’t Fear Death

Jesus tells us there is something worse than losing our life on this earth. For those who don’t believe in life after death, that sounds ridiculous. But believers understand that death as we know it is only the death of the body. After time or injury, our bodies give out and simply cannot survive anymore. Our souls, however, live on. Something happens to them after we die. Jesus tells us to fear “the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matthew 10:28). Moreover, He explains, “if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death” (John 8:51). If we fear God and believe in Jesus, our souls will endure past death and live eternally with God. But if we refuse God’s grace, we will be destroyed in hell. True death is eternal judgment.

When we leave this earth, we are either justly judged for our sin, or Jesus takes the punishment for us. John Piper said recently, “There is only one person God has treated worse than he deserved”. God the Father put the punishment for our sin on Jesus Christ so that we might have a way out, an escape from total destruction. Believing in Jesus is the only way to live free forever. Do not harden your heart to God’s immeasurable grace.
