End the Excuses

Ananias and his wife Sapphira kept a closed fist around what God gave them. They were both called to sell a piece of property, but instead of giving the whole profit back to God, they gave a part of it. I’m sure Ananias and Sapphira made excuses like, “If we don’t keep this money, we won’t make it through the month,” or “God won’t care if we keep some of it as long as we give most of it back.”

Do you ever find yourself behaving this way? We think, “God wouldn’t want me to go without having an eating out budget; God knows my rent is due on the 1st and then I’ll give Him what He wants.” The problem with making excuses is that the more we repeat those excuses, the more we believe them over time. God doesn’t want half-hearted obedience. When He gets half-hearted obedience from me, I’m showing Him I trust the consequence of disobeying man is worse than the consequence of disobeying God. I fear my landlord, my phone company or the inability to eat at my favorite restaurant more than I fear the Almighty God. Galatians 1:10 clearly states, “Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

My closed fist around my finances points to a serious heart problem God does not take lightly. A closed fist means, “I don’t trust You are worthy of my sacrifice or able to provide what You promise.” If I don’t believe God is worthy of my financial sacrifice, I’m trampling on the fact that He believed I was worthy of His Son’s sacrifice.

  • Do you tend to fear man or God more?
