Extreme Makeover: Forgiveness Edition

When a soldier departs for a tour of duty, he leaves his family in the care of someone he dearly loves and trusts: a best friend, a brother, a father, a neighbor. The soldier selects this person with great care, choosing someone who clearly loves him and his family as his own.

In John 21:15-19, Jesus demonstrates this same trust to Peter. Peter says three times, “Lord, You know I love you.”  Jesus responds, “[Then] feed my sheep.” In this moment, Jesus entrusted the church — his sheep — to an imperfect Peter. Jesus’ love and trust transforms Peter into a courageous speaker who leads literally thousands (Acts 2:31-42) of people to new life in Christ!

Like Peter, we are imperfect, sometimes defiant, and in need of unconditional love and forgiveness. Jesus knows we are imperfect, yet He chooses to love us, forgive us, and empower us to bring others into the church.

Because of Jesus’ great love, we respond as Peter did and dedicate our lives to sharing the good news of Jesus’ love with those who are far from Him. Jesus changes us, giving us the power to share the joyful news of a fresh start and infinite love in Him!
