The Reason For Our Hope

All it takes is 10 minutes watching the news to realize we live in a fallen world. From school shootings to genocide, people hurt each other daily and sin runs rampant across the globe.

But there is good news! The Lord saw our desperate need for help and sent His Son, Jesus, to rescue us. In 2 Corinthians 4:13-15, Paul reminds the church that our experiences on earth are only one part of a bigger story. One day, Jesus will come back and set things right. "Therefore we do not lose heart," Paul writes. "Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all" (2 Corinthians 4:16-17).

Paul found joy and hope in the face of terrible circumstances because he had a relationship with Jesus. The same is true for us. Salvation through Jesus Christ is the only thing that allows us to look at the world and its problems, and call them "light and momentary afflictions." This earth and these bodies were not meant to last forever. When we accept Jesus's offer of salvation, we receive the gift of eternal life and the Holy Spirit as our guide. Day by day, the Holy Spirit renews our hearts and minds as our physical bodies slowly age. What we're experiencing on earth will come to an end, and when it does, our renewed selves will live forever on a new earth with no death, crying or pain (Revelation 21:4).

When all is said and done, Jesus is the one thing that will remain. He is the reason we have hope. So when life seems overwhelming, let's "fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal" (2 Corinthians 4:18).

  • How can you use the tools the Lord has given us (worship, the Bible, prayer) to renew your mind and heart daily?
  • Does anything in your life feel overwhelming? How can you surrender it to the Lord?
