Face Value

Proverbs 2

I live in a family of jokesters. They are constantly playing pranks, telling tall-tales and doing anything they can to trick someone into believing things that aren’t true for the sake of a good laugh. They will tell me something just believable enough to be true, and I'll fall for it. As I've grown wiser to their mischief, I've learned to check my facts before repeating any suspicious information to others.

Proverbs 2 challenges us to approach our walk with the Lord with the same attitude. While it is important to be part of a local church where we can listen, learn and grow, we have to take responsibility for our relationship with Christ. Proverbs 2:3-4 urges us to "call out for insight" and "cry aloud for understanding" as if we are searching for a hidden treasure. Through Bible reading and prayer, we gain wisdom, knowledge and understanding. We grow closer to Christ, and we open the lines of communication He so desires with us. When we don't just take information at face value and instead seek out answers for ourselves, we allow God to teach us personally. We allow Him to refine us and speak to us in a unique way.

Our spiritual journey isn't just about showing up to church on Sundays. It's not just about serving or joining a small group. While those aspects of our relationship with Jesus are crucial, those things cannot substitute for developing intimate time with God where we take what we learn from others and flesh it out ourselves.

  • Are you truly seeking to know God more or only relying on what other people tell you about Him?
  • What can you do this week to spend more one-on-one time with Jesus?
