Famous Last Words

As a parent, my commands to my children — and their ability to understand and follow through — can make the difference between family happiness and chaos. The commands Jesus gave us are just as important for us, His children, to understand and follow.

Jesus’ last words in Matthew 28:18-20 are known as the Great Commission: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

The making of disciples involves inviting people to follow Jesus. This happens individually as we invite others to church, share our own stories and tell people about Jesus. It also happens on a church level as the church funds the building of new churches and its own growth to make room for more people to join God’s family. We can participate in making disciples on a church level by giving of our time by volunteering and our treasure (money) by giving tithes and offerings.

When we understand that God wants us to make disciples in these ways and begin to follow through on that command, our happiness will grow as we see people meet Jesus.

And the best part of all is that Jesus will be helping us the whole time. His command in Matthew 28 ends with a promise — that He will be with us, even to the “end of the age.”
