Fighting For Us Always

It is 5:30 in the afternoon, and your phone’s text alert is beeping for the third time in 5 minutes. You have 10 unread emails, and you know from the subject line that one of them is from your boss about a project due tomorrow. You have somewhere to be at 7pm, and your child keeps trying to get your attention to help them with their homework. When does it ever stop? In the world we live in, there is always something — often a handful of things — demanding our attention.

The most important person wanting our attention is our Heavenly Father. The Lord does not necessarily demand our attention, but He desires it more than anyone else ever will. Unfortunately, in the midst of busyness and chaos, the Lord is often the last to get our attention. All the while, He is at work trying to get our attention daily. Our God is creative and pulls out all of the stops to get our attention, draw us to a closer relationship with Him, and make us the person He created us to be.

In Revelation 8, the vision John receives shows numerous ways God is at work to get the attention of people on earth — silence in heaven, trumpets, fire, thunder and lightning. Even now, God uses people, the Bible and the earth He created to grasp our attention. Our role is to embrace Him in these moments, be still long enough to reflect on His love for us, and follow Him step by step wherever He leads.

  • What are some things fighting for your attention that you might need to say “no” to in order to give more attention to your Heavenly Father?
