Fighting In or Fighting For

Being selfish can destroy a relationship quicker than anything. Philippians 2:1-5 reminds me that selfishness has no place in a successful relationship.

“If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.”

There’s a lot to unpack in these verses, but it comes down to attitude. And it starts with being united. This doesn’t just mean you sync your calendars. It means you’re on the same spiritual page — that Jesus is No. 1 for both of you and you live like it. From here, the rest will follow.

Philippians tells us that if we are one with Christ, then we should strive to have His attitude. Humility, selflessness and looking out for others’ interests are all attitudes of Christ. When we are prideful and self-serving, we’re not helping anyone and strife is guaranteed.

Today, ask yourself if Jesus is truly leading your marriage. Are you fighting in your marriage by being at odds or being selfish, or are you fighting for your marriage by taking on the characteristics described in Philippians? Do you need an attitude adjustment? Pray that God would show where you need to change and ask Him to help you have Christ’s attitude.
