Finding Joy And Answers In The Bible

Many times, the Bible seems like an overwhelming place. A huge book of things to learn, lists of genealogies, and stories of people who died long ago. But, it’s so much more than that—if we let it be.

When we recognize God’s Word as wisdom and truth, it changes the way we read the Bible. Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

Approaching the Scriptures as “living and active” changes the game. The psalmist asks, “How can a young person stay on the path of purity...” (Psalm 119:9)? But, really this question could be anything: How do I keep my marriage pure? How do I love a difficult friend? How do I minister to those around me? The answer is the same: “...By living according to your word” (Psalm 119:9).

By seeking the Lord with all our hearts and hiding God’s Word in our hearts through reading and memorizing Scripture, we are changing our hearts and guarding against sin (Psalm 119:11). The more we learn, the more we can combat sin and temptation with the sword of God’s Word (Psalm 119:13).

As God’s Word is shaping us, changing us, our growing relationship with Him begins to fill us with the same joy as winning the lottery, holding our newborn for the first time, or graduating from college (Psalm 119:14-16).

God’s Word is powerful. It is wisdom and truth, living and active, joy and comfort. When we pursue the Lord as He pursues us, and give the Scriptures room to move us, we get to experience His life-changing joy and power in our lives.

Reflect:

  • How do you treat the scriptures? Do you give them room to move you? If not, what is one way you could open your heart for the Lord to work?
  • What is one question you have, or area of your life, that you need to apply the truth of Scripture to? How will you apply it?
  • Do you find joy in reading the Bible and spending time with the Lord? If not, what is one way you need to change your approach to delight in God’s Word?
