Free Indeed

People caught up in sinful lifestyles often cite not wanting to give up their “freedom” because they are having fun and because Christianity is “just a bunch of rules to follow.” Even as Christians, many of us often find ourselves struggling with physical temptation. It’s everywhere we look—television, movies, advertisements—our society has figured out that sex sells, but what we fail to realize is that when we give in to these temptations, we sell ourselves and our relationships for them. We become enslaved by them, as Jesus says in John 8:34, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin,” so we can find ourselves trapped by things like lust, pornography and adultery. Succumbing to these desires causes discontentment and emotional distance in our relationships with our significant other and in our relationship with God.

1 Corinthians 6:18 says “Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually sins against their own body.”

When I first read this, with John 8:34 in mind, I thought “Whoa, hold on. When I give in to temptation, not only am I sinning against my own body, but I’m a slave to doing so?” Where’s the hope in that? Thankfully, with God’s grace and mercy, John 8:35-36 goes on to say “Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” If you’re struggling with sexual sin, realize that Jesus has already paid the price for it, and you are forgiven. Rest in Him and be free, knowing that with every obstacle you overcome, your relationship grows stronger. Also, it never hurts to find someone that will let you confess your sin and help you be accountable, because as James 5:16 says, “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.”
