Free Indeed

When someone goes to jail, he must post bail to be set free. A price is placed on him that needs to be paid or else he will remain locked up in chains.

The same is true of us. We all are locked up in chains of sin, and a price must be paid to set us free. Paul tells us in Galatians 4:3-5, “So also, when we were underage, we were in slavery under the elemental spiritual forces of the world. But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.” In other words, we were all in chains until Jesus came and paid the price to set us free.

Jesus Himself says in John 8:36, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” A big house won’t set you free. A fancy car won’t set you free. A big bank account won’t set you free. A corner office with a skyline view won’t set you free. All these things may hide your chains, but they won’t break them.

Only Jesus can break the chains of sin. You don’t have to strive to unlock the chains when Jesus has already paid the price to free you.

Reflect:

  • Do you find yourself locked up in chains?
  • Are you looking to other things to try to set you free?
  • Has there ever been a time in your life where you have allowed Jesus to set you free?
