Gaining Wisdom

We all experience growing pains. Life’s sometimes painful lessons can be as simple as learning to not touch a hot stove as a child or as costly as discovering the effects of taking out a high interest loan as an adult. Growing wiser is a process, and we should seek out help as we grow.

Gaining wisdom can come from a variety of sources. The benefits of a wise mentor can keep us from making poor decisions. A mentor can help us navigate unfamiliar situations and bring us experience and perspective. Mentors can ask us hard questions and keep us accountable for our choices, actions and walk with Jesus.

Another source of gaining wisdom is through reading God’s word. When feeling overwhelmed or unsure, we can dive into God’s word. Proverbs 7:1 says, “My son, keep my words and store up my commands within you.” Through reading the Bible, we can store up God’s commands within us.  Once we have the wisdom of God stored within us, we can ask ourselves, “Am I living according to God’s word?”

We are not expected to figure out life and gain wisdom all alone. God gives us gifts like His word and other believers to help us in our journey. As we strive to grow closer to Jesus, we must be sure to use each of the tools He has given us!

Reflect:

  • What is one area of your life where you could use a mentor?
  • What is an area where you could take a next step and mentor someone else?
  • Are you using God’s word as a source to gain wisdom? What is one way you can begin to store up his commands within you today?
