Get Off The Bench

Have you ever seen a baseball player hit the ball from the bench? A baseball player can believe all he wants in how well he can hit the ball, but until he gets off the bench and steps up to the plate, he will never make contact with the ball.

James, the half brother of Jesus, writes in the second chapter of his book, “What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead” (James 2:14,17). In other words, you can have all the faith in the world, but if you don’t act on it, your faith is useless. Just like a batter can only hit the ball if he gets off the bench and steps up to the plate, our faith can’t do anything unless we do something with it. We can’t sit on the bench of life believing we will hit the ball.

Maybe the things we’ve been trusting and believing God for haven’t happened because we haven’t acted upon our faith. Maybe it’s called “taking a step of faith” because we actually have to take a step. God invites us to move, and  it’s time for us to step up to the plate.

  • Where in your life have you been waiting for God to move?
  • What next step do you need to take in order to act upon your faith?
  • What has held you back from making a move?
