Grounded Faith

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
(Romans 8:18 ESV)

Our lives are filled with instant gratification. The second we’re hungry, we have dozens of choices for satisfying our bellies, at any time, day or night.  When we see something at the store that we need for every-day living, most of us don’t have to save up money for months to buy it. The vast majority of us have never lived in a culture where long seasons of waiting—and living without—are an every day part of life, when something as unpredictable as the weather could lead to years of hardship.

When it comes to living in Christ, one of the more difficult realities of the nature of our hope is that we are in a constant state of waiting. We already have everything we need in Christ, but we have not yet received it in full for every need, in every circumstance or in every way.

That’s why one of the most persistent themes of scripture is the call to endurance and perseverance. (Hebrews 6:11; 1 Peter 1:13)

If your faith is true, grounded in a desire for more of Christ, and committed to seeing his purpose fulfilled in you for his glory, this period of waiting should not be discouraging. Rather, anticipating the joy of fulfillment is a spring whose waters are always able to refresh and revive us—when we are tired, frustrated, or simply sick of the brokenness of this world.

God wants us to work for his glory on earth, but never without the healing and comforting knowledge that eternity alone makes sense of all that we experience here. The “weight” of all that is extraordinary, unthinkable and unbelievable to come is the anchor that keeps us standing firm in our faith when the waves of circumstances we don’t understand threaten to overwhelm us.
