Gut Check

You grab your plate at the company dinner party and begin to stroll around adding just a little of this and a spoonful of that, trying to be sure you taste all of the delicious food without looking like a pig. After cleaning your plate, you begin your social waltz around the tables, sneaking a bite here and there while trying not to let anyone catch on to your strategy for seconds. An hour later, that extra slice of cheesecake and double helping of mashed potatoes doesn’t seem like the great idea you thought it was earlier.

God's discipline can take many different forms. Sometimes it’s a stomach ache that follows the binge at the buffet. Sometimes it's a sermon that offers a spiritual "gut check." No matter how He shows us the way, ultimately, following Christ requires self-discipline. Knowing what you should do or stop doing is God doing His part; following through and taking action is ours.

Reflect

  • What is one area of your life that needs more discipline? What is one thing you can do today to become more disciplined in that area?
  • Who can you trust to help you become more accountable when it comes to heeding God's discipline? If you don’t have someone to help hold you accountable, consider joining a group!
