Handing over the reigns

One thing’s for certain about leadership — it never lasts. Whether you’re the president of the United States or the leader of a home group, your stint in leadership only lasts a season. As older leaders step down and retire, a new group must be trained.

Moses was a successful leader, but he knew he couldn’t do it alone. Not only that, but God told Moses that Moses would die before the Israelites entered the Promised Land (Numbers 20:1-13), and God was raising up someone to take Moses’ place and lead them into it. Joshua was the man being groomed for the top post.

God instructed Moses to pass on some of his authority to Joshua (Numbers 27:20). Sometimes it can be difficult to let go of control, but if we don’t give upcoming leaders opportunities to lead how will they learn?

We don’t have to give them leadership over everything at once. Authority is typically earned piece by piece, and we’re given more when we’re faithful with what we have (Luke 16:10).

Good leaders will turn over control when needed.

Perhaps there’s an area in your life where God’s calling you let go of something and let someone else take over. It could be letting your child take over a household responsibility or giving a promising subordinate at work control of a project.

Good leaders will turn over control when needed, but sometimes they may need a push. God was there to let Moses know it was time, and when Joshua took over he was ready to lead Israel — and it was all thanks to Moses’ obedience.

  • How do you feel about letting go of some control? If you are uncomfortable with it, talk to God about your feelings, and ask Him to show you what He wants you to do.
  • Who is one person you are raising up to be a leader?
  • What is one way you can give that person some authority today?
