Haters Gonna Hate

Every great innovation has been faced with criticism. Before Apple released the Apple Watch, critics were already launching attacks, saying it is not revolutionary or up to former CEO Steve Jobs’ standards.

Whether you’re talking about the iWatch or anything else, critics don’t need to see a finished product to criticize. Nehemiah experienced that first hand.

Nehemiah’s critics taunted those working on the wall, asking:

“What are those feeble Jews doing?

Will they restore their wall? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they finish in a day?

Can they bring the stones back to life from those heaps of rubble—burned as they are?” (Nehemiah 4:2)

The critics couldn’t see God’s calling in Nehemiah’s life. Rebuilding the wall seemed impossible, and they were rooting for the Jews to fail.

Any time we take a next step, we also experience internal and external doubts and criticism. The question is: Who will we listen to? We can follow Nehemiah’s example and focus on what God is calling us to do. Or, we can be distracted by the critics who are rooting for us to fail. But we can’t follow both.

The critics are going to come. We can prepare our hearts for the doubt coming our way by praying and seeking God’s will through the Bible. When we seek God’s voice above all others, we’ll find the confidence to do what He’s calling us to.

  • Have you ever been criticized for taking a next step in your walk with Jesus?
  • What’s one doubt you’re wrestling with today?
  • What’s one step you can take this week to prepare your heart for the criticism that’s sure to come?
