He Fights for Us

Maybe you’ve heard the saying, “God helps those who help themselves.” In other words, we do the work, fight our battles, then God blesses us. We think if we do the right thing and get our act together, then we will win. This is a lie. It turns faith and service into a works-reward system.

“Getting it together” is not how we wage war to serve God. 2 Corinthians 10:3-4 says, “For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world.” Trying harder is what the world tells us to do. We think if we work hard enough, serve unselfishly enough, speak convincingly enough, then we will win.

The Bible teaches otherwise. Deuteronomy 20:4 says, “For the Lord your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.” We must remember that God calls us to be faithful to Him. From there, our hearts change and the Holy Spirit fights for us to give us victory. It is not with our own strength that we fight, but with the strength of the Holy Spirit inside us. Praise God that we need only to rely on Him!
