Help Comes From the Lord

How often do you stop to ask, “Where does my help come from?” The psalmist recognized that the Lord is the only source of true and lasting help. In Old Testament times, the temple in Jerusalem was God’s dwelling place on earth. The city was on a mountain, surrounded by other mountains, so for Jews in other parts of Israel, looking toward the hills was literally like facing God’s house and saying, “Help!”

The city on a hill served as a visible reminder of God’s presence. Today, we seem to lose sight of God so quickly. Things start going well, and we put our lives on cruise control. When you’re in a new relationship, things are going well at work or you’ve been blessed financially, it can be easy to start putting your faith in those things instead of the one who made them.

Sometimes, it takes hitting rock bottom to recognize how much we need God’s help. But that doesn’t have to be the case! Psalm 121 says God “will not let your foot slip” and “The Lord will keep you from all harm — He will watch over your life.”

We all need God’s help, and we need it daily. If you’re unsure whether you’ve been trusting Him, look at what you turn to for help. Where do you get relationship advice or financial advice? What shapes your opinions of yourself and others? Is it what you see on TV, what you hear from friends or what your read in God’s word?

When the Lord is the source of our strength, we see life more clearly. We recognize that hardships are ultimately for our benefit, pointing our attention back to the Father who watches over our lives.
