How To Avoid Regret

Chances are, there’s something in our past that we regret or makes us think, “If I had only known then what I know now.” Looking back, we see that our teachers and parents who tried to warn us or offer guidance were right after all.

When a person becomes a Christian, he surrenders his life to Christ and is called to set aside his old self in place of a new identity found only through a growing relationship with Christ (Colossians 3:3-4, 2 Corinthians 5:17). Change is evidence that we are growing in our walk with Christ. Proverbs 15:31 tells us that “whoever heeds life-giving correction will be at home among the wise.” Being open to the teaching and criticism of others leads us to wisdom, and verse 32 tells us that to resist such criticism and teaching is the same as hating ourselves!

Just like our parents and teachers had a different perspective when we were younger, so do other Christians in our lives. We cannot do life alone—the Godly wisdom and perspective of other believers is essential to our growth because it provides a new perspective into issues we are facing and what God’s word says about these issues.

  • What is one thing I can do to allow myself to be more open to the teaching of Godly believers?
  • Who am I around regularly who can speak God’s truth into my life? If no one comes to mind, consider joining a group of other believers!
  • What is God teaching me now through the wisdom of other believers?
  • Who in my life is God calling me to encourage and challenge to grow in their faith, and how can I reach out to them? (Hebrews 10:24-25)
