How To Be Gentle To Everyone

“Remind the people ... to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle toward everyone” (Titus 3:1-2).

Being gentle to everyone is a difficult task. It’s hard to be gentle to the person who talks behind your back. It’s tiring to watch a loved one give into the same sin over and over again. And let’s be real, we often want to shake the parent who puts their desires before their child’s unmet needs.

I’d be willing to bet we’ve all looked, exasperated, at another person’s life and thought, “How could she do that again?” or  “I don’t understand why he behaves that way.” At the heart of these thoughts is pride, a sense that we are better than someone or above that kind of behavior. But are we really?

Before we met Jesus, we weren’t that different from the people we’re struggling to love. Titus 3:3 says “we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another.” In the middle of our sin, Jesus was gentle toward us. He showed us mercy and saved us from our sin. We didn’t do anything to deserve it. We didn’t earn it. Who are we to deny someone else the same gentleness that Jesus showed us?

When sin shows itself in someone’s life, we can respond in two ways. We can slander and look down on the person or remember how Jesus has shown His mercy in our failures. Let’s not allow our ministry to be bound by a trap of self-righteousness. Let’s be busy sharing the hope Jesus has poured into our lives.

  • Have you received Jesus’ forgiveness?
  • Do you need to forgive someone?
  • Have you been placed in the position to observe someone’s disobedience or  foolishness? How can you minister to them through God’s love?
