How To Live Happily Ever After

It was a beautiful day for a wedding. As the visitors were escorted into the church, they were not asked, “Groom's side or bride's?” If anyone asked which side was which, they were told, “Oh, we’re not choosing up sides — we’re uniting as one blessed family.”

It seems many couples today fail to grasp that God wants us to live happily ever after, just like in fairy tales. Instead, when problems crop up, they take sides, and their friends and families take sides, driving them apart.

But God said, “A man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. So, they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, let no one separate” (Matthew 19:4-6).

Does that, especially at the end, sound like an official wedding ceremony? And so it is meant to be. And God also meant it to be that the male and female submit to one another out of reverence for Christ (Ephesians 5:21).

There are many things that have changed in our world, but we can still live by God's words — that as one flesh, husbands should love their wives and wives should respect their husbands. Isn’t that what a good marriage is all about — loving and respecting each other, as one, together?

Fairy tales don’t always come through for us, but using the Bible’s wisdom in our everyday lives, we could definitely live happily ever after.
