Is Your BFF Really Forever?

God is a jealous god. Like a husband who loves His bride, God wants our undivided attention, affection and worship. That’s why James 4:4 says it is impossible to be a friend of God if we are a friend of the world. To be a friend of the world is to choose what the world offers -- wealth, status and temporary satisfaction  -- instead of what God offers -- peace,  joy and eternal life.

When we want short-term happiness more than we want to be like Jesus, we become His enemy. 1 John 2:15-17 says, “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”

When life gets hard, it can be tempting to trade the real, lasting abundance Jesus gives for a temporary knock-off. Jesus died to give us an abundant life here on earth and forever in heaven. Let’s not settle for anything less.

Reflect:

  • What are three characteristics you look for in a best friend? Do you see these things in your relationship with Jesus?
  • We are tempted by temporary pleasures. What is one area of your life where you are tempted to take shortcuts or to settle for less than God’s best?
  • What step can you take this week to be a better friend to Jesus?
